Foaming Agents
"Chemical Foaming Agents" (CFAs) or "Blowing Agents" are additives used by plastic manufacturers, which create "foam", or tiny air bubbles in products. Handles, window fames, automotive parts, medical and computer equipment, toys, etc. are all made with CFAs. The benefits are that products are lighter, use less plastic resin, and have a more uniform finish.
Foaming agents are used in plastics also for the purposes of density or hardness reduction, as well as weight for savings in material costs. CFAs are chemicals that can be incorporated into plastic to form a cellular structure through the release of gas during processing.
EPI is marketing patented Endothermic (EPIcor), Exothermic (EPIcell), and Exo-Endo (POLYcor) CFAs with special emphasis on its endothermic line of CFAs. Endothermic CFAs are far more versatile than the exothermic CFAs and can be used in numerous new applications and products that currently do not use any type of CFAs.
All conventional processes such as extrusion, calendaring, and injection molding can be adopted for producing cellular materials.
