What is Enviro Cover System?

Enviro Cover System is a patented, degradable geosynthetic alternative daily cover (ADC) system for landfills consisting of:

  • Enviro Cover - a degradable plastic film manufactured with EPI's "prodegradent" additive for covering waste in landfills,
  • Enviro Cover Deployer - equipment for deploying Enviro Cover in landfills, and
  • The method of applying Enviro Cover.

Enviro Cover is a specially engineered degradable polyethylene film uniquely categorized by the ASTM as a “non-reusable geosynthetic”. It does not require removal or retrieval once it is placed on the working face, thus providing the benefit of 24-hour coverage to the waste.

Enviro Cover is a safe and effective plastic cover. With EPI's degradable film technology, Enviro Cover degrades upon the exposure to sunlight, heat and/or mechanical stress. The film has extremely good tear and puncture resistance, and elongation characteristics to meet the requirements for deployment and for alternative daily cover. Enviro Cover is degradable and will not interfere with normal landfill mechanics. Leachate and biogas can be collected. The waste can continue to degrade, allowing the landfill to settle and for partially recovery of valuable airspace. Enviro Cover is impermeable when it is applied. It helps minimize rainwater infiltration and reduce undesirable leachate generation.

Enviro Cover Deployer is the equipment for deploying Enviro Cover in landfills. It automates the waste covering process by simultaneously deploying Enviro Cover on the waste and distributing ballast to anchor the film. It is designed to utilize a variety of ballast such as sand, gravel, ground tires, glass, soils, etc. and is compatible with most common landfill equipment.

Due to patent, EPI is probably the only company that can offer this degradable film alternative daily cover system to the landfill industry.

Where is Enviro Cover System used?

Enviro Cover is used in landfills as an alternative daily cover (ADC). It replaces the traditional 6 inches (15 cm) of soil cover to control disease vectors, fires, odors, blowing litter, and scavenging.

In addition to daily cover application, Enviro Cover is used in areas with prolonged waste coverage and in bioreactors with extensive liquid and biogas circulation.
